DRONES
IN
TANZANIA

“When technology is no longer novel, videos need more substance to impel viewers to watch, engage, and share, and we’ve already reached that point with camera drones”

BRINGING A DRONE TO TANZANIA
If you are planning to travel to Tanzania with your drone then the first step is to obtain the relevant permits from the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA). You require permits to fly a drone in Tanzania regardless of whether you are visiting as a tourist or part of a film crew or whether you are bringing in a large professional drone or a small consumer drone weighing under 250g.
If you plan to fly your drone in national parks and other protected areas, you will require additional permits from other authorities such as the Tanzania Film Board and Ministry of Defense. Prior to your arrival in Tanzania you are required to apply for a TCAA Import Permit, which allows you to enter the country with your drone, and a TCAA Authorization Permit, which allows you to fly your drone in Tanzania.

DRONE USE IN NATIONAL PARKS
Yes, you are allowed to fly your drone in the national parks, however, you need to have the relevant permits to do so. It's important to note that procedures and guidelines for drone use in the national parks is the same regardless of whether you're a using your drone for commercial filming purposes or you're just a tourist wanting to get some cool aerial footage of your holiday in Tanzania.

The procedures for obtaining drone permits in Tanzania’s national parks may seem complex and costly, but they exist for good reason. Unregulated drone use can disturb wildlife, interfere with breeding or hunting behaviors, compromise visitors’ privacy, and disrupt the natural serenity that makes these parks so special. By controlling who can fly drones and under what conditions, the authorities ensure the protection of animals, the safety and enjoyment of tourists, and the preservation of Tanzania’s unique and fragile ecosystems.
